It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Allen Lancaster, 78, of Hiawassee, a
beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Allen was born in LaGrange on October 20, 1945, to
the late Bela and Virginia Emory Lancaster. He graduated from LaGrange High School before
attending Mercer University, in Macon, GA, where he earned a degree in History. Allen was an
accomplished student athlete, and as an adult, he enjoyed playing golf. A man of inimitably dry
wit, he was always quick with a joke, in good or bad times alike, and he enjoyed a deep
conversation.
Allen spent most of his professional career as a banker before retiring to the North Georgia
mountains. He was a member of Rabun Gap Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder,
taught Sunday school, and served as a member of the church finance committee.
Allen is survived by his wife, Lynne Hillerby Lancaster; children, Valerie Barnes (Jim) of Amelia
Island, FL; Susan Mintmire (Mark) of Chicago, IL; Lynn Lancaster of Clayton, GA; and Joe
Lancaster (Lacey) of Alexandria, VA; and grandchildren Sam Barnes (Taylor) of Charleston, SC;
and Frank Mintmire of Chicago, IL.
A memorial service in Allen’s honor will be held on Saturday, November 4, at 2 p.m., at Rabun
Gap Presbyterian Church, 8397 Wolffork Rd, Rabun Gap, GA, officiated by Don Barber. In lieu of
flowers, donations can be made to the Rabun Gap Presbyterian Church building fund.
Banister-Cooper is in charge of arrangements for Mr. Lancaster Jr.
