Mrs. Eunice Mae Carter Powell, age 85, of West Union Community, Young Harris, passed away on Thursday, February 28, 2013 at Chatuge Regional Nursing Home. The only surviving child of James Roy “Jim” Carter and Birdie Mae Nichols Carter, Eunice was born February 01, 1928 near the Towns-Union county line. She later had a sister, Mary Carolyn whom passed away at birth. Eunice graduated from high school at age fifteen, then graduated from Young Harris College, receiving her Bachelors Degree from North Georgia College and Masters Degree from University of Georgia.
She first taught in a small country school in West Union. Her thirty-six year teaching career concentrated on English, and included twelve years in the classroom at East Fannin High School, and high school librarian at Towns County for many years until she retired from the Comprehensive High School Library in 1983.
In 1947, Eunice married William Wayde Powell and they enjoyed twenty years of marriage until Wayde died unexpectedly of a cerebral hemorrhage at age thirty-nine.
Eunice is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, William Wayde Powell, Jr. and wife, Robin Walden, of Dahlonega, GA; Jim and Roxanne Powell, of Young Harris, GA; four granddaughters, Rhetta Powell and her husband, Tommy Mitchell; Mae Lena Powell, Leah Powell and Kayden Powell; two grandsons, Nicky Powell and wife Hope Powell, Wayde Powell III and one great grandson, Alexander Carter Mitchell.
Eunice was saved and baptized at age eleven, and is a lifelong member of West Union Baptist Church, where she served as a church clerk for fifty years and taught Sunday School for many years.
Eunice loved the Lord, loved her family, loved her church and the West Union community. In the classroom “Mrs. Powell” inspired her students to love learning and to enjoy classic literature. Her favorite poem that she love to recite was, “The Lamb” from William Blakes “Songs of Innocence”.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 02, 2013 at 11:00 AM from West Union Baptist Church with Rev. Ricky Rogers officiating. Music was provided by the Shook Family. Pallbearers were Stuart Nichols, Richard Nichols, Jamie Shook, Reggie Sprinkles, Brian Underwood and Harold Henderson. Interment was in West Union Baptist Church cemetery. Banister Funeral Home of Hiawassee in charge of arrangements.
