Livia Joyce Armstrong (1934 - 2014)
Livia Joyce Armstrong, 80, dance instructor, choreographer and performer, died at her home Sunday, December 14, 2014, at her home in Hiawassee, GA, after complications of illness. The family will hold a private memorial service.
Ms. Armstrong, daughter of the late Louise Scarbrough and Forrest P. Armstrong, was born in Atlanta, GA. At a young age she was introduced to classical music by her Aunt Lucile S. Rust, a music teacher, and thereafter expressed her love of music and passion through dance. Ms. Armstrong was a graduate of Washington Seminary in Atlanta and studied ballet at the American School of Ballet in New York City. She taught dance at the Sarah Wagstaff School of Ballet in Atlanta before opening the Joyce Cadle School of Ballet in Gettysburg, PA. Ms. Armstrong continued her studies in modern dance with Judy Annis at Gettysburg College and Hanya Holm at Colorado College. Ms. Armstrong was also artistic director of Mandala Dance Theatre in Pembroke, NC. For many years Ms. Armstrong led a creative life, teaching, performing, and inspiring others in the performing arts.
Ms. Armstrong is survived by her sisters Forrest Nutting and Nancy McWhorter, her daughters, Nena Cadle and Sian Cadle and her five grandchildren Luisa, Juan and Diego Ribas-Cadle and Nolin and Bela Howard. Her memory would be honored with a donation to the St. Josephâs Indian School of Chamberlain, SD, www.stjo.org. Banister Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
