Lloyd Clay Dotson, 86, of Young Harris, GA., passed away peacefully on September 1, 2024, at home surrounded by his loving family. 

Clay was the son of Scott & Rose Dotson, born in Hurley, VA., on October 26, 1937. He is survived by his wife Betty, son Mark (Kathy), Grandsons Sam & Drew Dotson, and Chris Hampton. Granddaughter Brandy Franklin (Austin), great-grandsons Bentley &Baylor, sister Phyllis Hill, sister-in-law Verley Dotson, and many nieces & nephews.

Clay's academic journey was a testament to his unwavering dedication and sharp intellect. He earned his bachelor's degree from Pikeville College, his master’s from Appalachian State, and his Ph.D. from the University of Georgia. His love for education led him to Young Harris in 1961, where he taught history until his retirement in 2004. His contributions to YHC were numerous, serving as a history professor, academic dean, and interim president. His academic prowess and dedication to education have left a lasting impact on the college and its students, inspiring many along the way.

Clay was not just an academic but also a true sports enthusiast. He was a loyal supporter of Kentucky Basketball, Georgia Football, and the New York Yankees. His love for sports extended to his local community, particularly Young Harris College Athletics. He was a familiar face at their basketball, baseball, and soccer games. His passion for golf led to the naming of the annual alumni golf tournament at YHC as The Clay Dotson Open, the college's largest yearly fundraising event. His love for sports was a bond that connected him with many in the community.

Clay was not just a scholar and a sports enthusiast but also a dedicated community member. His commitment to service was evident in his work with Mac McCall, installing and maintaining TV antennas on Bell and surrounding mountains to ensure residents could receive television signals from Atlanta. He was a member of the Towns County Lions Club and Sharp Memorial Church, always ready to lend a helping hand. His love for the outdoors was reflected in his gardening and home maintenance, where he always put in his best effort. His selfless service was an inspiration to all who knew him.

 Memorial Service: Saturday, October 12, at 10:00 a.m. at Sharp Memorial Church in Young Harris.
