Velza M Barrett

Mrs. Velza Mae (Kirby) Barrett, age 96, of Hiawassee passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2020. Velza was born on August 23, 1924 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Gordon and Cora (Wood) Kirby. She was a member of Union Hill Methodist Church. She loved to cook and aimed to please all, often making potatoes mashed and fried just to make certain everyone had their favorite side. Velza loved being around and spending time with her family. She also deeply enjoyed gospel and country music, getting dressed up for outings,and going to church. She especially loved selecting her jewelry for the day. Naturally when Chatuge Nursing Home held their beauty pageant, she eagerly participated. 
Mrs. Velza is preceded in death by her above mentioned parents; husband, Wade Barrett; and brother, Frank Kirby. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, W.L and Cathy Barrett, Vester and Martha Barrett, and Roger and Darlene Barrett; daughters and sons-in-law, Jimmie Nell and Jimmy Owenby, Mirle and Dale Penland, and Sheila and Pete Kimsey; brothers, Gordan Kirby Jr. and Bobby Kirby; sisters, Marie Gregory and Ann Franks; fifteen grandchildren; thirty-four great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends. 
Visitation: Wednesday, August 26, 2020 in the chapel of Banister-Cooper Funeral Home from 5:30-8:00p.
Graveside Service: Thursday, August 27, 2020 at Burch Cemetery at 11:00a.
